God is Omniscient, Omnipotent, Omnipresent, Eternal, Immutable, Incomprehensible, Self-existent, Self-sufficient, Infinite …

My small group is doing Keeping Your Focus When Your Dreams Are Shattered – A Study on Joseph – (Genesis 37-50). In the second lesson, it lists 22 characteristics of God. Each characteristic has about two or three verses. But they only give the reference, not the verse itself. They make the point that it’s good to look up verses in your bible and write the characteristic in the margin. But I also like being able to look through all the verses together.

Here’s all the characteristics with their complete verses from the ESV.

Omniscient – God knows all. He has a perfect knowledge of everything that is past, present, or future.

Do you know the balancings of the clouds, the wondrous works of him who is perfect in knowledge, (Job 37:16 ESV)

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it. (Psa 139:1-6 ESV)

Omnipotent – God possesses all power. He is able to bring into being anything that He has decided to do, with or without the use of any means.

Eternal – God has no beginning, and He has no end. He is not confined to the finiteness of time or of man?s reckoning of time. He is, in fact, the cause of time.

For I lift up my hand to heaven and swear, As I live forever, (Deu 32:40 ESV)

For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy:?I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite. (Isa 57:15 ESV)

Here’s all the characteristics with their complete verses from the ESV.

Immutable – God is always the same in His nature, His character, and His will. He never changes, and He can never be made to change.

Of old you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you will remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will change them like a robe, and they will pass away, but you are the same, and your years have no end. (Psa 102:25-27 ESV)

?Hear, O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, I will testify against you. I am God, your God. Not for your sacrifices do I rebuke you; your burnt offerings are continually before me. I will not accept a bull from your house or goats from your folds. For every beast of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills. I know all the birds of the hills, and all that moves in the field is mine. ?If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and its fullness are mine. (Psa 50:7-12 ESV)

Long-suffering – God?s righteous anger is slow to be kindled against those who fail to listen to His warnings or to obey His instructions. The eternal longing for the highest good for His creatures holds back His holy justice.

But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous ( that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not become partners with them; (Eph 5:3-7 ESV)

Truthful – All that God says is reality. Whether believed by man or not, whether seen as reality or not, if it is spoken by God, it is reality. Whatever He speaks becomes truth, as we know it.

(for you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God), (Exd 34:14 ESV)

One thought on “God is Omniscient, Omnipotent, Omnipresent, Eternal, Immutable, Incomprehensible, Self-existent, Self-sufficient, Infinite …

  1. Why did they omit 2 Sam 22:27 and Psalm 18:26 that the Lord is pure with those who are pure but shrewd/astute with the crooked/wicked.
One way he does this is by using parable language in dreams and visions.
The parable is a riddle. He does it to hide the Kingdom truth from the proud but also uses it when he knows the Christian will interpret it wrong and the error serves His purpose to carry out his plan. Being shrewd. Ie. He wants to give an object lesson to the Japanese not to judge and condemn. So he plants a Christian in Japan who does everything wrong in their eyes. So the Christian has to appear to be a failure. To Japanese pastors he is a false prophet. So the Christian gets the parable messages wrong and gives a ?false prophecy.?
Then he uses the condemned one to save their lives.
He was shrewd when he condoned the lying spirit to speak victory in the mouths of Ahabs prophets to tell Ahab the lie that he would have victory when the Lord had determined his death.
